The answer to that question---at least in the town where I grew up, is nope, not at all. In fact, the person who kept the opossum in a desk drawer was the town lawyer (not the town's lawyer, but the general practice lawyer in town). If I remember correctly, the lawyer (whose name was fittingly butch) had made the opossum a tiny opossum hammock in the drawer. And, when Butch and his wife got a divorce, Butch got custody of the opossum. Dispite the divorce, the wife stayed on as Butch's office manager/secretary/paralegal.
Aside from a town filled with pet opossum's, the town I grew up in is also made up of firm believers in the big bang theory--as far as the theory being god said bang and there it was. In other words--not many believers in evolution. Unfortunately, my dad did not pay much mind to that fact when he decided that he would go ahead and talk to the prisoners he taught at the local jail about evolution. As you may imagine, shortly after his science discussion, the jail ran out of money to pay for security for his class and he got canned. jesus--you'd think he could have stuck to math and physics. But no--when those prisoners broached the subject, he just had to answer them. The whole situation is kind of unfortunate because he really did love teaching at the prison. Ah well, what can you do.
