So, our two year old dryer is pretty much toast. The technician came by, and determined that the control board of the dryer needed to be replaced. This is something akin to a mother board or a giant computer chip that runs the whole dryer. Once this part ($289 plus labor) is replaced the technician can determine what else is wrong--because something else is wrong for that to have failed according to him, and fix that. I was somewhat dubious about the technician guy. First, he didnt seem to believe me that the dryer would only work with the door open. Next, he didn't seem to be able to turn the dryer on. I finally told him--you have to press down the button for several seconds. But, it turns out that we need approximately $500 worth of work on a dryer that we could buy new for $600. We're going dryer shopping today.
In the meantime, the really sucky thing is that because we live in a tiny house with a tiny space for a washer/dryer, the washer and dryer are each independant units, but they are what they call "stackable." In other words, they come with a mounting bracket kit to insure that the dryer does not vibrate off the top of the washer. This means we are pretty limited in our dryer selection. we should buy another of the same brand so it can be mounted. Otherwise, we will be fabricating a mounting system ourselves. Which probably is not all that hard (plus, laura's friend LA-Sarah will be around and I would force her to help us). Our other option is to get a brand new washer AND dryer. I'd of course rather spend the money on MORE JACKETS!
