The search and rescue dogs, Willow and Valarie (who has also searched in Oklahoma City, after September 11 and in Katrina, and numerous other rescue missions), came this morning to look for William.
They easily tracked him through the park to a house at the other end, where he apparently was hanging out with the other cats--he went on the porch, to the food bowl, around the house, then he went out the driveway. just past the driveway, near some brambles, they indicated high stress/death, a few feet further, they gave a pretty solid death indication. The place is totally undeveloped, lots of brambles. Harry, the SAR handler said that, based on the dogs death indicators, it was 97 percent certain that he was killed in that spot. Harry said it could have been a hawk, or owl, but probably it was a racoon.
We are very sad that William is dead. We will still concentrate our looking in that area and put up signs, but I believe that he is probably dead. Having the search and rescue was a great idea, because now, at least we know what has probably happened.
Even though this is not a happy ending, we certainly had a happy beginning and middle with William. We will miss him.
Here is a video of him in happier times: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QHs5fTG2xLE
